Getting around Warren County on a wedding day

Warren County runs for roughly forty miles along the Delaware River, from the Water Gap in the north to Phillipsburg in the south, and most of it is reached by two-lane county roads rather than highways. I-80 crosses the top of the county and I-78 the bottom; in between, Route 94 carries traffic through Blairstown, Route 46 runs from the river at Columbia through Belvidere and the Pequest valley, Route 57 ties Phillipsburg, Washington and Hackettstown together, and Route 31 runs north and south through Washington.

From Mauricio’s base in Sparta, Hope and Blairstown are roughly thirty to forty minutes away, Hackettstown about the same, and Phillipsburg closer to an hour. Those numbers hold up most of the year, but the county roads around Hope and Johnsonburg are narrow and unlit, so a getting-ready location twenty minutes from the ceremony on paper deserves a cushion once guests, a florist van and a limo are all on the same lane.

Venues out here often sit at the end of a long farm lane or a single gravel drive. Mauricio checks the parking and arrival plan with your coordinator beforehand, so the photographer is not the car blocking the shuttle.

Light and seasons in Warren County

The Kittatinny Ridge runs along the county’s northwest edge to the Water Gap, and Jenny Jump Mountain rises just behind Hope. In the river valleys and the low farm country below them, the sun drops behind a ridgeline before the printed sunset time, so Mauricio times couple portraits by the light actually on the fields rather than the number in an app.

Open farmland is the other half of the story. Wide pastures and cornfields catch long, low evening light in late summer, and the mill ponds and streams around Hope and Belvidere hold a soft reflected glow into the last half hour of the day.

Autumn color usually peaks across most of the county from the middle to the latter half of October, with the higher ground near the Water Gap turning first. Spring is greener and quieter, and the stone buildings of the old villages photograph as well in the flat light of an overcast April day as they do in sun.

Warren County: stone villages, farms and the river

Hope was laid out in 1769 by Moravian settlers from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and many of its limestone buildings are still standing and in use. Mauricio photographed Jackie and Chris’s wedding at The Inn at Millrace Pond in the village, and the rest of the county shares the same character: farms, mills, wineries and golf country rather than ballrooms.

Warren County borders Sussex, so these are venues close to home for Mauricio. For engagement sessions, the streets of historic Hope, the river overlooks at the Delaware Water Gap, Jenny Jump State Forest and White Lake in Hardwick are all close by. State and federal parks have their own photography rules, so it is worth checking for a permit before a session.
