Getting to the Poconos and Lehigh Valley

From Sparta, I-80 west is the straight line into Pennsylvania. The Delaware Water Gap is roughly forty-five minutes away and Stroudsburg about fifty; the resorts up on the plateau around Skytop run closer to an hour and a quarter. For the Lehigh Valley, Route 33 drops south from I-80 to Bethlehem and Easton in a little over an hour from Sparta, and Jim Thorpe is about an hour and a half. All of these are approximate and depend on the day.

The day matters more here than almost anywhere. I-80 westbound fills on Friday afternoons with weekend traffic from New Jersey and New York, and the bridge at the Water Gap is a toll crossing, which is worth a line on the guest information card. In the Lehigh Valley, Route 22 is the slow road and I-78 the faster one.

Once you are off the interstate, Pocono roads like Route 209, Route 191 and Route 447 are two-lane and wooded, with deer and little lighting after dark. Mauricio plans transfers between the getting-ready location and the venue with that in mind, and confirms parking and arrival details with your coordinator beforehand.

Light and seasons in the Poconos and Lehigh Valley

The Poconos are a wooded plateau above the Delaware River, and the region is defined by forest and water: lakes, streams and waterfalls under tall canopy. Under trees the light is soft and green through the middle of the day, and the last direct sun leaves a clearing early, so Mauricio picks portrait spots at your venue that open to the west.

Blue Mountain, the Pennsylvania continuation of the Kittatinny Ridge, separates the Poconos from the Lehigh Valley to the south. The valley side is more open, with river towns and farmland where evening light lasts longer, and the stone and brick buildings of Bethlehem’s historic district hold warm light well into the evening.

Fall color comes early up here. The higher ground of the Pocono Plateau usually peaks in early to mid October, the lower valleys about a week to ten days later, and the Lehigh Valley later still in the month. Winter is a real season too: snow is common at the higher resorts, and a snowy ceremony photographs well when the timeline accounts for early sunsets.

Photographing a Pennsylvania wedding from Sparta

Sparta sits under an hour from the Pennsylvania line, so the Poconos and the Lehigh Valley are a short drive rather than a destination. Travel within New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania is included. Destination weddings are quoted up front. Mauricio photographs every wedding himself, scouts a venue he hasn’t worked at before the day, and plans the timeline with your coordinator.

For engagement sessions, the overlooks along Route 611 at the Delaware Water Gap, the historic downtown of Jim Thorpe, Lehigh Gorge State Park, the Moravian streets of Bethlehem and the blast furnaces at SteelStacks are all good choices. State and federal parks set their own photography rules, so it is worth checking for a permit before a session.
