Light and Seasons Across North Jersey

North Jersey covers more vertical range than most entire states manage — from sea level on the Hudson to well over a thousand feet in the Highlands — and that spread shows up in both the light and the calendar. Out west in Sussex, Morris, and Passaic, the ridges pull the sun down early and the last workable light arrives sooner than the sunset time suggests. Out east on the waterfront the situation inverts: with the sun going down at your back, it is Manhattan across the river that takes the last of the color, and the city holds it for ten or fifteen minutes after the New Jersey bank has gone dim. In between, the suburban belt through Bergen and Essex offers mature tree canopy, estate lawns, and reservoir edges — softer, more filtered light that is easier to work in through the middle of the day. The seasons move across the region on a schedule you can plan around. Spring reaches the lower and eastern counties first, with flowering trees through Bergen and Essex in mid-April and the Highlands a week or two behind. Autumn runs the other way: color starts at elevation in early October, peaks across the northwest through the middle to latter half of the month, and reaches the eastern counties by the very end of it.
