Getting to the Hudson Valley on a wedding day
From Sparta it is a short run north to Hamburg, where Route 94 heads up through Vernon and crosses the state line straight into Warwick: about twenty-two miles, and roughly forty minutes. Chester and Goshen are closer to fifty minutes, Central Valley and the venues near Harriman about an hour, and New Paltz or the riverfront towns farther north roughly an hour and a half, depending on the route.
Inside Orange County, Route 17 is the main east-west road, with the New York State Thruway, I-84 and Route 17A doing most of the rest. The stretch of Route 17 and Route 32 by Woodbury Common outlets in Central Valley backs up on weekends and through the holiday shopping season, so a Saturday timeline with guests driving in from the city or New Jersey needs extra time there.
Most venues out here sit on country roads with long drives and limited parking, and many guests will be arriving from out of state. Mauricio confirms the route and arrival plan with your coordinator beforehand, and builds transfers on realistic Saturday traffic rather than a mid-week map estimate.

Light and seasons in the Hudson Valley
The lower Hudson Valley is ridge country. The Hudson Highlands rise around Bear Mountain and Storm King, the Shawangunk Ridge runs along the west near New Paltz, and Mount Peter and Bellvale Mountain stand over Warwick. Venues set below a ridge lose direct sun earlier than the posted sunset, so Mauricio plans portraits around the light on the ground rather than the forecast.
Around Warwick and Pine Island the land opens into orchards and the flat Black Dirt farm country, where the evening light runs long and low across the fields with nothing to block it. That contrast is worth planning for: a ridge-side ceremony and a field-side portrait session can be a few minutes apart and feel like different days.
Fall color usually peaks across the lower and mid Hudson Valley in the middle to latter half of October, and September brings apple season to the Warwick orchards. Summer is green and humid, with haze that softens the far ridges; late spring is the quiet favorite, with long evenings and the gardens at the old estates in bloom.

Photographing a Hudson Valley wedding from Sparta
Mauricio lives in Sparta, at the northern edge of New Jersey, so Orange County is a short drive rather than a destination. Travel within New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania is included. Destination weddings are quoted up front. He photographs every wedding himself, scouts a venue he hasn’t worked at before the day, and plans the timeline with your coordinator.
For engagement sessions, the village of Warwick and its orchards, the hamlet of Sugar Loaf, the shoreline of Greenwood Lake and, farther north, the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie all work well. State parks and preserves set their own photography rules, so it is worth checking for a permit before a session.

From a Google review
“We couldn't have picked a better wedding photographer than Mauricio from Hariel Xavier Photography. From the moment he showed up, his fun personality and energy made our day even more special. He kept us relaxed and made everything so easy.”
