Getting around Passaic County on a wedding day
Passaic County is really two places joined at a narrow waist around Wayne and Pompton Lakes. The north is the Highlands: West Milford, Ringwood and Wanaque, with reservoirs, state forest and winding roads like Skyline Drive and the Greenwood Lake Turnpike. The south is dense and suburban: Wayne, Totowa, Little Falls, Paterson, Clifton and Passaic, laced together by I-80, Route 46, Route 23 and the Garden State Parkway.
That split matters for a timeline. A suite in Clifton and a ceremony in Ringwood is a forty-minute drive on a good afternoon, much of it on Route 23 or I-287, and the Route 23 and I-80 interchange in Wayne slows down at rush hour. From Sparta, Mauricio reaches Ringwood or Wayne in roughly forty to forty-five minutes, and he plans to arrive early either way.
In the northern towns, cell service can drop out on the reservoir roads, so Mauricio confirms meeting points and the order of the day with your coordinator before the wedding rather than relying on a text.

Light and seasons in Passaic County
The Ramapo Mountains and the hills around the Wanaque Reservoir put the northern half of the county in shade earlier than the forecast suggests. On a clear evening at a Ringwood estate, the last direct light leaves the lawn well before sunset, and Mauricio plans portraits around that rather than the time printed on the timeline.
The southern half is lower and more open. Garret Mountain Reservation in Woodland Park sits on a ridge roughly five hundred feet up, with overlooks toward Paterson and the New York City skyline, and the seventy-seven-foot Great Falls of the Passaic give Paterson a backdrop few cities have, best photographed when the river is running high in spring.
Fall color reaches the northern hills first, usually peaking from the middle to the latter half of October, and the southern towns follow toward the end of the month. Spring brings the formal gardens in Ringwood into bloom from April into June.

Passaic County: manors, mountains and the Great Falls
Mauricio photographed Crysta and David’s wedding at Skylands Manor, the Tudor-revival mansion at the New Jersey Botanical Garden in Ringwood. The county’s settings run from that kind of stone estate and lakeside clubs in the north to the large banquet halls of Wayne, Totowa and Paterson in the south.
For engagement sessions, the gardens at Skylands, the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, the overlooks at Garret Mountain and the shoreline of Greenwood Lake are all close by. The botanical garden requires a professional photography permit through Ringwood State Park, so that is worth arranging a few weeks ahead.
