Getting around Ringwood on a wedding day

Ringwood is the top of Passaic County, a mountain town of reservoirs and state parks reached by Route 511 along the Wanaque Reservoir. Skylands Manor sits inside Ringwood State Park at the end of a long drive through the botanical garden, and the gate, the parking field and the walk to the manor all need planning. Mauricio has done it; Crysta and David’s day ran on time.

Guests come up Route 287 to Route 511 or over the mountain from Route 17; both are winding and slow behind a cyclist on a Saturday. The hotels are in Mahwah and Wayne, twenty minutes each way.

The manor’s Tudor stone and the formal gardens are at their best in the last hour, when the sun comes across the garden terraces from the west and the stone goes warm. The Ramapo ridges take the direct light a little early, which makes the garden light soft. The crab apple allée blooms in early May; fall peaks in the third week of October.
